FIU: Wiggins Carries Panthers to Victory Over Wildcats

MIAMI  – An impressive ground attack by FIU on Saturday night carried the Panthers to a 30-17 victory over New Hampshire.

With the win, FIU improves to 1-2 overall on the young season. UNH falls to 0-2 on the year.

The Panthers led the Wildcats 20-17 late in the fourth quarter, before a crazy punt return resulted with Dimitry Prophete scooping up a fumble for a touchdown to put the Panthers up by a couple of scores late.

Kaylan Wiggins led the Panthers in his first career start at quarterback. The redshirt sophomore threw for 127 yards on 12-of-18 passing, while earning 187 yards rushing on the ground for two scores.

The 187 yards rushing is tied for fifth all-time at FIU for most yards rushing in a single game. Defensively, Sage Lewis earned his first career interception, while collecting eight tackles.

Saturday’s game was full of rain and lightning, as the contest was delayed for over 30 minutes near the end of the first quarter.

FIU found the endzone twice in the first half, after a pair of rushing touchdowns from Napoleon Maxwell and Wiggins gave the Panthers a 13-10 lead heading into the break.

Coming out of the locker room, the Wildcats found the endzone after an 86-yard touchdown pass from Max Brosmer to Dylan Laube.

The Panthers went back to Wiggins and the ground attack to follow, as the QB continued to rack up the yards as he plowed his way in for a four-yard score to put FIU up 20-17 with 6:57 remaining in the third quarter.

After a crazy punt return from Tony Gaiter IV resulted in a fumble return for a score by Prophete, the Panthers tacked on three more points to close out the game as Jose Borregales nailed a 20-yard field goal to bring the final margin to 30-17 in favor of the Panthers.

FIU hits the road next week as the Panthers travel to Louisiana Tech on Friday, Sept. 20. Kickoff is slated for 8:00 p.m. ET.

GAME NOTES:  Attendance for Saturday’s game was 11,756….Kaylan Wiggins 187 yards rushing is the most by any FIU quarterback in school history….the 187 yards rushing for Wiggins is tied for fifth all-time at FIU for most rushing yards in a single game…Wiggins two-yard score in the second quarter was his first touchdown of the season….Sage Lewis earned his first career interception after picking off a pass in the second quarter.
