NASL: Martinez and Chavez Lift Miami FC Over Florida Gulf Coast University

MIAMI – The Miami FC’s preseason schedule continued, Saturday morning, with a matchup against Florida Gulf Coast University.

The first half saw great combination play by the midfield and forwards, led by Stefano Pinho. Pinho was a constant threat with his non-stop motor and piercing runs.

The club’s first chance came thanks to a hustle play by Pinho. He pressured a FGCU defender as he tried to play the ball out of the back, but Pinho was there to steal the ball and nearly put the squad ahead.

Pinho would get two more great opportunities early in the first half with only a strong save and last-ditch tackle keeping him off the scoreboard.

As the first half pressed on Gabriel Farfán started to make a major impact on the match. Great runs and accurate crosses had Florida Gulf Coast on its heels. It would be FGCU that scored first, with forward Albert Ruiz finishing for the Eagles.

The Miami FC responded fast with two quick goals from Ariel Martinez.

The first goal saw Martinez finish a Dylan Mares cross with a well-timed volley. His second goal came on a hustle play, picking up a Pinho rebound and slotting it in the back of the net.

The midfield and forwards continued to connect well in the second half, even though it was an entirely new Xl on the pitch.  Poku was great at the top of the box with his hold-up play and strong passing. He came close to scoring three times early in the second half, getting on the end of three great crosses.

Jamie Chavez combined well with Poku in the second half, eventually connecting for a goal. Poku created a 1v1 chance for Chavez, who beat the keeper to put the Orange and Blue ahead, 3-1.

The Miami FC continued to control the ball in the second half, securing a 3-1 victory.
