SUNS: Biloxi Takes Opening Game of Series, 9-1

BILOXI, Miss. – The Jacksonville Suns (13-18) fell to the Biloxi Shuckers (19-11) by an 9-1 score at MGM Park in the first game of the five game series on Monday night.

Jacksonville starter Jake Esch (4-3) suffered his second straight loss on the road trip, allowing a season-high seven runs on a season-high 11 hits with a walk and three strikeouts.

Biloxi starter Adrian Houser (2-3) earned the win by tossing six innings where he only allowed a run on three hits. Shuckers reliever Brooks Hall earned the save by pitching the last three innings in scoreless fashion.

The Suns got off to a good start at the plate, with Yefri Perez hitting a leadoff double off Houser. Two batters later, J.T. Riddle brought him home on an RBI groundout to give Jacksonville a 1-0 lead. Riddle’s RBI was his 25th of the year, which leads the Southern League. Riddle also later in the game had a single, which extended his hitting streak to six games.

The Shuckers tied the game in the bottom of the second with an RBI single from Nick Shaw, then had a four-run bottom of the third to take a 5-1 lead. Biloxi did further damage in the fifth inning, with Javier Betancourt having an RBI single, pitcher Houser hit an RBI triple, and then Kyle Wren brought him home on an RBI single that capped a three-run inning that gave Biloxi an 8-1 lead. Biloxi added a run in the eighth off Suns reliever Tyler Kinley after Wren led off the inning with a triple, and was brought home by Brett Phillips on an RBI groundout to put the score at 9-1, which would be the final.

The Suns will return to action in game two of the series on Tuesday night against the Biloxi Shuckers at MGM Park at 7:40 p.m. ET. The Suns will start left-hander Jarlin Garcia (0-2, 4.80 ERA) against Biloxi right-hander Jorge Ortega (0-2, 2.60 ERA).
