SUNS: Jacksonville Can’t Overcome Early Lead in Loss

The Jacksonville Suns (11-15) fell to the Jackson Generals (16-8) by an 11-6 score in the first game of the of the five-game series at The Ballpark at Jackson on Wednesday night.

Suns starter Jake Esch (4-2) took the loss, allowing five runs on four hits with four walks in his shortest start of the year, an inning and two-thirds. Generals starter Brett Ash (4-1) picked up the win with six innings where he only allowed an unearned run on six hits.

The Generals built an 8-1 lead through the first three innings. Steve Baron and Zach Shanks both delivered RBI triples as part of the Jackson hot start to the plate against Suns pitchers Esch and reliever Patrick Johnson. Jackson carried an 8-1 lead to the top of the eighth, when Brady Shoemaker delivered a two-RBI double to draw the Suns closer at 8-3. The Generals responded against Suns reliever Tyler Kinley in the bottom of the eighth, with three runs of their four straight hits to begin the inning.

In the ninth, Jeremias Pineda legged out an infield single, his third hit of the ninth, to extend the inning for J.T. Riddle. The Suns shortstop blasted a three-run homer to deep right field to put the score at 11-6, which would be the final.

Suns relievers Tyler Bremer and Tyler Higgins both turned in scoreless outings for Jacksonville, combining for three and a third innings of scoreless relief to calm the Jackson offense in the middle innings.

The Suns and Generals continue their series tomorrow with the second game of the five-game set at 8:05 p.m. ET. The Suns will send left-hander Jarlin Garcia (0-1, 3.76 ERA) to the mound against Generals right-hander Dylan Unsworth (1-0, 1.21 ERA).
