SUNS: Lopez Pitches Six Shutout Innings in Mobile Win

Mobile BayBears right-hander Yoan Lopez pitched six shutout innings, and left fielder Stewart Ijames came within a triple of the cycle in the visitors’ 6-0 win and second straight victory over the Jacksonville Suns in front of 1,496 at the Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville Tuesday night.

Mobile (6-6) began the game with a double by shortstop Ildemaro Vargas and single by third baseman Gabrial Noriega to put runners at first and third bases. But right-hander Austin Brice (0-1) struck out the next three batters to end the inning.

The BayBears scored the first runs against Brice this season in the second inning. Ijames led off with a single and went to second base on Brice’s wild pickoff throw.

Catcher Michael Perez hit a one-out RBI double to left-center field, before Lopez reached on infield single that deflected off Brice on the mound. With two outs, third baseman Peter Mooney’s throwing error allowed Perez to score and Noriega to reach first base.

BayBears center fielder Mitch Haniger followed with a two-run double to center field for a 4-0 Mobile lead. The runs were unearned against Brice, who still holds a 0.00 ERA.

Lopez (2-0) did not allow the Suns (6-7) to bring the tying run to the batter’s box for the rest of his six innings. He scattered five hits and a walk, while stranding one baserunner in each of the first five innings. Lopez, left-hander Steve Hathaway and right-hander Adam Miller combined to retire 13 of the final 14 Suns batters.

Brice retired nine of the final 10 batters he faced in five innings. He allowed seven hits and struck out a season-high seven batters without a walk.

Ijames drove in the final two Mobile runs with a sixth-inning RBI double off right-hander Patrick Johnson and an eighth-inning leadoff home run to the right-field bleachers against right-hander Tyler Kinley.

The Suns continue their series with Mobile at 11:05 a.m. Wednesday, when Southern League Pitcher of the Week and Suns right-hander Ryan Newell (0-0) is scheduled to face BayBears right-hander Johnny Omahen (0-0).
